These animals are casually found on the roofs of many original houses in Deauville, the heart of Normandy in the north of France. These wonderful whimsical creatures not only survived the Great War, but are being recreated today, although NOT for the same purpose they served in the 16th and 17th century. Back then, they were created to assure the water tightness of typical French terracotta roofing tiles. Today they have become a decorative architectural feature for roofs.

The animals are made like glazed pottery, poly-chromed and are entirely hand made. They are fixed on the roof with a rod that is then screwed unto the roofing tiles.
